JR笠置駅から約2㎞ほど離れた所に笠置山では、かつて第96代・後醍醐天皇(ごだいご てんのう)と鎌倉幕府の合戦があり、その歴史を伝える為に像が作られました。
笠置の地は、京都府、奈良県、三重県を繋ぐ街道が交わる要衝であり、昔から交通や軍事や商業の上で重要な地点でした。第45代・聖武天皇(しょうむてんのう)の時代には恭仁京(くにきょう)という首都が置かれた事もあります。
駅から栗栖天満宮の鳥居が見えますが、こちらは裏参道(うら さんどう)になります。
石段の数は多く、角度も急なので注意してください。
栗栖天満宮の境内には、石灯籠が立ち並んでいます。
石灯籠の並びの先に、拝殿(はい でん)があります。
拝殿の向かいに、本殿(ほん でん)があります。
本殿の前には、祓戸社(はらえど しゃ)があります。
本殿の御祭神は、第60代・醍醐天皇(だいご てんのう)の大臣を勤め、この地に宮殿を作る事を進言したとされる菅原道真(すがわら の みちざね)です。
本殿を守るかのように、左右に社が立ち並んでいます。
本殿の向かって左側に、道真公の神使(じんし)である牛の石像と、手水舎があります。
手水舎の向かいにも牛の像があります。長年に渡って撫でられてきた所為か、ツヤツヤです。
本殿の裏側に、建御雷神(たけみかづち の かみ)を祀る鹿島神社(かしまじんじゃ)があります。
後醍醐帝は、笠置山山頂付近にある笠置寺(かさぎでら)に籠城して、鎌倉幕府と戦いました。その後、吉野山・金峯山寺の近くにある吉水神社(よしみず じんじゃ)を皇居に定めて、南朝を開きました。
