元興寺は、南都七大寺(なんと しちだいじ)の一つに数えられる、奈良仏教・真言律宗(しんごんりっしゅう)の寺院です。

日本国初の首都である藤原京(ふじわら きょう)は、西暦700年代に平城京(へいじょう きょ)に遷都しました。その時に藤原京の近くにあった元興寺(現・飛鳥寺 安居院)もこの地に移転し、元興寺と名が改められました。
駐車場は、門の中に入った所にあります。飛鳥寺は豪族・蘇我氏が建立した氏寺(うじ でら)でしたが、移転の際に朝廷が管理運営する官寺(かん じ)になりました。
東門(ひがしもん)です。元は東大寺(とうだいじ)の西南院(せいなん いん)にあった門ですが、1411年に元興寺の境内に移築したという記録が残っています。
国宝の極楽坊・本堂(ごくらくぼう・ほんぼう)です。極楽堂(ごくらくどう)とも呼ばれています。堂内は中央に御本尊があり、その周囲を歩いて回れる珍しい形になっています。
極楽坊・本堂の西側には国宝の禅室(ぜん しつ)があり、南側には浮図田(ふと でん)と呼ばれる石仏と石塔が安置されている場所があります。
浮図田は、1988年に元興寺の境内や他の場所から集められた2500もの石仏・石塔を田園の稲穂のように設置した、比較的新しい観光名所です。
浮図田には、釈迦世尊の足跡を信仰の対象とした仏足石(ぶっそくせき)もあります。
浮図田の南側に、法輪館(ほうりんかん)と呼ばれる宝物収蔵庫があります。内部では重要文化財の仏像や、貴重な資料が展示されています。
法輪館の西側に小子坊(しょう し ぼう)と呼ばれる休憩スペースがあり、数々の貴重な文化財が設置されています。また、小子坊には北向土間不動尊(きたむき どま ふどうそん)の御もあり、護摩供養(ごまくよう)が行われています。
小子坊には、珍しい造形の鐘があります。
小子坊には泰楽軒(たいらく けん)という茶室もあります。
小子坊・泰楽軒の近くにビュースポットがあります。この看板が目印です。
飛鳥寺が移転する際、屋根の瓦(かわら)も運び出され、今も極楽坊・本堂と禅室の一部で使用されています。もちろん国内最古、現役の瓦です。当時に作成された瓦は色が一定ではなく、上部が細く下部が幅広い独特の形をしています。
この瓦を重ねる葺き方を、開発者の行基菩薩(ぎょうき ぼさつ)に因んで行基葺き(ぎょうき ぶき)と言います。
石碑の側に、弁財天(べんざいてん)を祀る神社があります。
境内には役小角(えん の おずぬ)の像もあります。役小角は飛鳥寺で孔雀明王(くじゃく みょうおう)の呪法を授かり、大峰山で蔵王権現(ざおう ごんげん)を感得し、金峯山寺(きんぷせんじ)を開山したとされる伝説的な人物です。
国宝の禅室を北側から。研究の結果、西暦582年に伐採された木材の部分が残っている事が分かっています。

境内をほぼ一周した所、極楽坊・本堂の北側に、かえる石があります。元は大阪城にあった曰く付きの奇石です。
