恭仁京は、西暦740~745年の間だけ機能した、幻の首都です。

恭仁京の規模は小さく、都市の遺構も確認されていませんが、大極殿(だいごくでん)と呼ばれる建物の基壇が残っています。
手前の石は、大極殿の礎石です。
大極殿は、天皇が祭祀や儀式を行う宮殿です。恭仁京と大極殿の造営を行ったのは、第45代・聖武天皇です。
西暦745年に難波宮(なにわ の みや)に遷都した後、大極殿の建物は山城・国分寺(やましろ・こくぶんじ)としてそのまま使用されました。
聖武天皇は、国内の重要地点に国分寺と、七重塔(しちじゅう の とう)を建立しました。国分寺で最も寺格が高かったのは、平城京(へいじょう きょう)の近くにある東大寺(とうだいじ)と、法華寺(ほっけじ)でした。
大極殿の跡地の隣は公園になっていて、道路に面した所が無料駐車場になっています。
ここには何かありそうですが、実は何もありません。
少し離れた所から見てみましょう。ただの公園の一部です。
公園の右側には、七重塔の礎石が残っています。
礎石の大きさから、七重塔の大きさが偲ばれます。
恭仁京の近くには、この地域の要衝であり、1300年の歴史を誇る笠置寺(かさぎでら)があります。
