丹生川上神社・上社は、大峰山脈・吉野川沿いにある古社です。
大滝ダムの南側、国道１６９号線沿いにある道の駅・杉の湯川上。その手前の信号から坂道を上って少し行った所に、駐車場の入り口があります。
あまり規模は大きくありませんが、無料の駐車場です。右側に階段が見えます。
春になると、境内には桜が咲き乱れます。
駐車場の階段を下りると、入口手前の道路に出ます。歩行者の場合はショートカットになります。
駐車場の奥にある階段を上ると、大きな石鳥居が見えてきます。
石鳥居の扁額には、上社の御祭神である高龗大神(たか おかみ の かみ)の名が刻まれています。
雨冠に三ツ口の龍と書いて「オカミ」と読みます。オカミは龍の古語であり、古来より龍は水や雨を司る神として信仰されてきました。因みに、高(たか)は山の上を意味します。
オカミの字は下記のようにも書きますが、意味は同じです。
石段を上ると、右側に藤棚が見えてきます。五月上旬が見頃です。
藤棚の向かい側に、手水舎があります。
手水舎の前にある階段を上ると、拝殿が見えてきます。この拝殿は1998年に造営された、比較的新しい建造物です。
丹生川上神社・上社は、2016年12月17日の未明に放火の被害に遭いました。火をつけられたのは、写真(2013年撮影)右側にある龍の像と思われます。
拝殿の右側に、上社に奉納された日本酒・やたがらすの樽酒と、樹齢約６００年の杉の御神木があります。
拝殿にかかる扁額には、神雨霑灑(しんう てんさい)と揮毫されています。これは神の雨が降り注ぎ、潤して、恩恵を施すという意味です。
扁額の右側には、新酒が出来たことを知らせる杉玉(すぎたま)が吊り下げられています。杉玉は酒林(さかばやし)とも言い、日本酒の造り酒屋などの軒先に吊られているものです。水の神様は、酒の神様でもあるからでしょうか。
拝殿の中に、御神木の中から出てきた霊石や、昔の礎石が並べられています。
拝殿の右側には、御神馬の像があります。昔は雨が降って欲しい時には黒い馬を奉納し、長雨が止んで欲しい時には白馬を奉納するという習慣がありましたが、現代は生きた馬の代わりに絵や像を奉納しています。
御神馬の像の後ろには、旧境内地から発掘され、復元された祭場跡が展示されています。この祭場跡は1200~1300年代に造営されたものらしく、造営当時は拝殿や本殿の無い古神道的な信仰の姿だったようです。
祭場跡の右側には、高龗大神の御遷座を記念する石碑があります。御遷座とは、平たく言えば転居や引っ越しの事です。
祭場跡の向かい側には、御遷座前の元宮(もとみや)の遥拝所があります。遥拝とは、遠くから礼拝する事を言います。
遥拝所から見た元宮です。元宮は大滝ダムの底にあるので、直接参拝する事は出来ません。 旧社殿は、奇祭・おんだ祭りで知られる飛鳥坐神社（高市郡明日香村）が譲り受け、そこの御本殿になりました。
拝殿の左側にも、御神馬の像があります。この写真の中央に写っているのは、天皇陛下が魚をダム湖に放流した時に使用された放流台です。その後ろにあるのは境内末社の門です。
境内末社の手前にある手水舎です。
境内末社では、彌都波能売神(みづはのめ の かみ)、大国主神(おおくにぬし の かみ)、事代主神(ことしろぬし の かみ)、火武須比毘神(ほむすひ の かみ)、大山祇神(おおやまつみ の かみ)が祀られています。
境内末社の向かいに、社務所 兼 神輿庫(しんよこ)があります。
上社、中社、下社の御守りを集めると、三社参りの御神符(ごしんぷ)を授与して頂けます。

和紙で作成された、三社参りの御朱印帳もあります。
神話の山・天香具山の土で作られた勾玉守りを毎月12個分集めると、神武天皇ゆかりの天平瓮(あまつ ひらか)を授与していただけます。
