平等院は、十円硬貨に描かれている寺院として有名です。

平等院の入口は一か所だけですが、少々分かり難いです。
ここが平等院の入口です。料金を支払って入場しましょう。
入口からすぐの所に鳳翔館(ほうしょう かん)がありますが、ここからは入れません。
旧南門(きゅう みなみもん)は、京都の伏見城(ふしみ じょう)から移築されました。
重要文化財の養林庵(ようりん あん)も、伏見城から移築されました。
養林庵の隣に、浄土宗の寺院である浄土院(じょうど いん)があります。
浄土院を正面から。扁額には山号の朝日山(あさひ さん)と揮毫されています。
堂内には、旅や航海の安全を祈る船乗観音(ふなのり かんのん)の像が安置されています。
浄土院の境内には、1640年に建立された禅宗様式の羅漢堂(らかん どう)があります。内部には、美術的・歴史的に極めて貴重な龍の装飾画があります。
浄土院から鳳凰堂(ほうおう どう)の裏側を望みます。
池の畔にある細い道を歩いて、鳳凰堂に向かいます。
道の途中に、天台宗の寺院である最勝院・不動堂(さいしょういん・ふどうどう)があります。平等院の管理は、浄土宗・浄土院と、天台宗・最勝院が、一年毎に交代で行っています。
最勝院の境内には、池殿地蔵尊(いけどの じぞうそん)があります。
池殿地蔵尊の側に、歌人として有名な源頼政(みなもと の よりまさ)の墓があります。源頼政は、高倉宮・以仁王(たかくらのみや・もちひとおう)と共に平家打倒の為に挙兵し、平等院での戦いに敗れて自害しました。
最勝院の近くから鳳凰堂を望みます。有料拝観の際に、この橋を渡って堂内に入ります。
橋の向かい側には表門(おもて もん)があります。宇治駅から表参道(おもて さんどう)を歩いてくる場合は、ここから平等院の境内に入ります。
鳳凰堂を斜めから。手前の池は阿字池(あじ いけ)と呼ばれています。
屋根に鳳凰の像があるので、鳳凰堂と呼ばれるようになりました。内部に阿弥陀如来の仏像が安置されている事から、阿弥陀堂(あみだ どう)とも呼ばれています。
鳳凰堂の向かって左側に鐘楼(しょう ろう)があります。平等院の鐘は装飾が美しい事で有名で、６０円切手のモチーフにもなっています。
鐘楼の近くに、鳳凰堂の廃材を利用して建立された六角堂(ろっかく どう)があります。
平等院の隣に、鳳翔館(ほうしょう かん)という博物館があります。内部では鐘楼にあった鐘の実物や、霊木から削り出した仏像などが展示されています。
鳳翔館の出口に鐘楼があります。
この梵鐘(ぼんしょう)は精巧なレプリカですが、撞く事は出来ません。
平等院は紅葉の美しさでも有名です。
